How can communities improve their care for migrant workers' children?
如何加强对农民工子女的关怀?
In tandem with the ever-faster pace of China’s urbanization, a large population of villagers has been flowing into cities as migrant workers. Many children have also settled in the cities where their parents are employed. However, most of these migrant children lack the company of families and friends and often find it hard to incorporate into their new urban environments. This case is that of Hope Community of Lengquan village in Beijing City, a community that has made three successful attempts to improve migrant children’s living and education environments and to develop their competencies to adapt to the city.
随着我国城市化步伐的不断加快,大量农村人口进入城市成为了外来务工人员。与此同时,许多外来务工人员的子女(农民工子女)也随着父母来到外地生活,这些孩子们大多缺少家人和朋友的陪伴,难以融入陌生的城市环境。为帮助这些孩子获得更好的生活和教育环境,提高孩子们适应新环境的综合素质,北京市冷泉希望社区做出了一系列的探索和实践,并取得了良好的成效。
First, Hope Community has offered systematized education services that target specific needs of migrant children. A tailored training system has been designed and practiced, which includes modules related to topics such as holistic education, civic education, and parenting education. Second, the community has offered the children various mentoring programs. By establishing long-term partnerships with universities, enterprises, theatrical companies, and celebrities in Beijing, the community has organized activities such as volunteer services, sessions of sharing personal experiences, and theatrical performances. These activities have not only enriched migrant children’s after school life, but also enabled them to develop a more positive outlook on career and life. Third, the community has played a positive role in developing life skills of the children and their relationship with parents. This is particularly achieved by Hope Kitchen, in which the children learn certain cooking skills and to which parents are frequently invited to have meals with their children.
一方面,社区针对农民工子女特殊的教育需求,提供针对性和体系化的教育。通过建立更加具有针对性的教学和服务系统,为孩子们提供贴心实用的定制辅导,囊括了全人教育、公民课堂和亲子教育等板块。另一方面,社区与多方平台合作,为孩子们提供多元化的教育引导服务。社区通过与北京市当地的高校、企业、剧团、社会名人达成长期的合作,以提供志愿者服务、举办个人经历分享会、组织戏剧表演活动等形式,对孩子们的学习进行辅导,丰富孩子的课余生活,并引导其建立积极的职业观和人生观。与此同时,希望社区还设立了社区希望厨房,带领孩子们进行实物做饭,并定期邀请家长们参与举办亲子宴,提高孩子们的自理能力,增进亲子关系。
Two lessons can be drawn from this case for other communities facing challenges regarding migrant children. The first is that community services for these children should target their specific needs for education, life experiences, and future development. A good system of education and training should aim at benefiting the children in the long run. Therefore, particular attention should be paid to the development of their competencies to manage pressures from studies and migrant life at the present and in the future. The second lesson is that effective services for migrant children rely largely on establishing a functional mechanism for stable collaboration with volunteers (e.g., university students and celebrities).
北京市冷泉希望社区对农民工子女的关怀实践为其他社区解决相关问题提供了诸多有价值的经验。第一,考虑实际需求,针对性提供社区服务。从教育、生活、未来发展的多个方面入手,全面考虑了流动儿童的实际需求,不间断多角度地为孩子现今以及未来可能面对的学业及生活压力提供心理和能力锻炼,形成了良好的教育培训体系,有利于青少年的长远发展。第二,寻求达成稳定合作,形成良好志愿服务合作机制。社区通过积极寻求社会合作,吸引大学生、社会各界工作人员、社会名人成为长期稳定的志愿者,形成良好的社会志愿服务效应,为外来务工人员子女的健康成长全方位护航。
