Urban Renewal and Restructuring of State-community Power Relationships in China

With a focus on the lived experiences of some cities such as Guangzhou and Beijing, this study aims to achieve two main research objectives as follows: (1) To identify the key factors affecting competition and collaboration between multiple actors (including the local state, private developers, and villagers) in the planning and implementation of VIC redevelopment projects ;(2) To evaluate how different modes of collaborations relate to the implementation progress of VIC redevelopment projects.

This study has both significant practical and theoretical implications. On the practical front, it will clearly identify the opportunities and constraints for VIC redevelopment. These findings will help improve project planning, design and management, leading to the building of more supportive governance institutions and greater cooperation between all local actors and interest groups. Moreover, this study will offer insights, critical to policy review for a better balance of economic, social and political concerns in urban renewal. On the academic front, this study will shed new light on the institutional complexities of urban renewal in China, offering a solid foundation for the advancement of theories about the restructuring of power relationships between the state and the community in urban planning and governance.
