Urban Regeneration in Chinese Cities: An Empirical Study of “Village-in-the-City” Redevelopment in Guangzhou

This project will combine qualitative analysis with quantitative modeling to examine (1) what factors are critical in influencing villager consensus on redevelopment and (2) how villager decisions affect the implementation progress of VIC redevelopment. By bringing the role of villagers back into the theorizing of the state-society relationships in VIC redevelopment, this study will develop a heuristic framework for analyzing the institutional complexities (both formal and informal) of urban regeneration in China.

The findings of this study will offer a solid foundation for the advancement of theories on urban development planning and governance. On the practical front, this study will offer insights, critical to redevelopment project management and policy review for a better balance of economic, social and political concerns in urban regeneration.
